Registering Your Address (Anmeldung)

Registering your address (Anmeldung) is required by law in Germany. You must register within 14 days of moving in. Failure to do so can result in a fine.

Required Documents

• Valid passport or ID card
• Wohnungsgeberbestätigung – landlord confirmation form (legally required; your landlord must provide it)
• Registration form (downloadable from your city's Bürgeramt website)

Booking an Appointment

Visit your city's Bürgeramt website and book an appointment online under "Termin buchen". Without an appointment, waiting times can be very long.

Result

You will receive the Anmeldebescheinigung (registration certificate) — needed for opening a bank account, health insurance, payroll, and many other administrative tasks.
