Opening a Bank Account in Germany

You need a bank account to receive your apprenticeship salary, pay rent, and cover daily expenses. First step: you need your Anmeldebescheinigung (registration certificate) before opening an account.

Online Banks (Easiest Option)

  • DKB – free, VISA debit card, 100% online, light SCHUFA requirements
  • N26 – modern app banking, free basic account, no SCHUFA requirement
  • Bunq – good for newcomers, flexible requirements

Traditional Banks

Sparkasse, Volksbank, Deutsche Bank – in-person appointment needed, sometimes harder for newcomers.

⚠️ Important Warning

Never let others use or "rent" your bank account. This constitutes money laundering assistance and you will be held legally responsible regardless of how the money is used. See our scam warnings page.
