Health Insurance for Apprentices

In Germany, health insurance is mandatory for everyone. As an apprentice, you are typically covered by statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung – GKV).

Who registers you?

Your training company usually registers you with a statutory health insurer automatically when your contract starts. If not, you must choose and register yourself before your start date.

Costs

The contribution is split equally between you and your employer — roughly 7–8% of your apprenticeship salary each. With a typical Azubi salary below €1,000, your share is very low.

Health Card (Gesundheitskarte)

After registering, you will receive your health card. Bring it to every doctor's appointment.
